Interventional & Structural Cardiologist

Providing advanced heart care at The Wesley Hospital, Brisbane, Dr. Stephen Cox specialises in acute coronary syndrome treatment, angioplasty, and structural heart disease.

Dr. Stephen Cox is an Interventional Cardiologist based at The Wesley Hospital, Brisbane.

Dr. Cox has a special interest in acute coronary syndrome, angioplasty, and structural heart disease

Dr. Cox honed his interventional cardiology skills while training at the Lahey Clinic in Boston in the mid-1990s, and has been delivering a combination of private practice and public hospital care to patients in Brisbane since returning in 1997.

His inpatients are cared for at The Wesley Hospital. He is a Senior Visiting Specialist at The Princess Alexandra Hospital, and is currently Clinical Director of Princess Alexandra Hospital’s Cardiac Catheter Laboratory.

Dr. Cox says while a great deal has changed in the practice of cardiology in the past 25 years, the fundamentals of delivering good patient care remain the same. “My passion centres on improving a patient’s quality of life through bringing together all of the available tools to create an individualised care plan — utilising medical evidence and recommended treatment guidelines to guide a patient’s care,” he explains.

“Medications have come a long way to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease in recent years,” he says. “These, together with lifestyle modifications, are key to a patient being able to continue to lead a full and happy life “.

Dr. Cox offers his interventional skill set to those patients who require additional measures, such as coronary artery stenting or percutaneous closure of ‘holes in the heart’.

He employs a ‘team-based’ model of healthcare, where he says every member of the team — including the patient — must be actively involved to ensure optimum success of the care plan.”
